Quite often
I receive questions from authors on my show, which are not
geared to drive the listener to "run out and buy the book." If
you have an interview and your host doesn't read the book (most
likely) then your questions have to direct the listener, you
can"t always depend on the host. This is very helpful
to both traditional house published and self-published authors.
The following
are two examples of my transformation techniques on ten typical
questions sent to a radio or television host by an author.
I always like ten questions for my interviews because of my
time format (1-hour)
After I transform
ten questions I will break them down into a 30 minute and 15
minute prioritized format, recommending the questions I would
use and why.
Transforming
the INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
This is part
of what I shared with one of my guests after the interview.
He asked my opinion and I was happy to share my expertise.
As you go through you will see:
* The original
question in black font
* My recommended
question in blue
* Why I suggested
the change in red
On
occasion I gave an answer example; they are listed in bold
red.
(This
was in the intro to my response) I
believe everyone has gone through suffering of some kind -
but not everyone recognizes their own situations
as suffering - especially if it didn't involve
death, divorce or illness. What's in your book for those who don't
think their suffering? This book will help them help others
- everyone wants to or can do that! So be sure to include that in
your interview questions.
Here
are the revisions I made, let me know your thoughts.
Example 1:
Why did you
choose to write a book about suffering?
There
are numerous books about suffering on the market today, how
is yours different?
The
audience now automatically grasps that your book will be different.
Make your answer pop.
"My
book is exactly what is says, Straight Talk! I believe we
need to..."
Example 2:
Is there
really a simple formula for "getting over it" when
something bad happens in your life?
This
is okay. I really don't like yes or no questions. Maybe I would
say,
Now
this is something all of my listeners (viewers) want to know,
can you share the simple formula for "getting over it."
(This
is the response I received from my client:)
"Linda's
diagnostic on my interview technique was extremely helpful.
She showed me how to get my message out quickly and build credibility
with both the interviewer and the audience." Lawrence
