A silly thought came to mind this morning. What if there was a game called Self on a Shelf?

The essence of the game would be to see how many times throughout the day the player would choose to put others ahead of themselves. Literally.

In the grocery line or in merging traffic are two ways.
What examples can you think of?

This act of placing self on a shelf is a game changer. Choosing to serve others agenda-free allows us to experience the joy of humility. Our world slows just a bit, opening a window into the possibilities of God’s design for us.

It’s true. I enjoyed serving as a waitress many years ago. I needed the money, but the smiles I received from my customers gave me joy. Satisfied tummies, good conversation, and serving others well —prompt a smile every time.

Where does humility begin?

Caring and sharing in the workplace or lending two hands when only one is needed is beautiful humility in action.

A Scripture that speaks to this is in Philippians, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians‬ ‭2:3-4‬ ‭NIV).‬‬

Who knew there was a verse for waiters and waitresses? God is so amazing!

I don’t serve customers in a restaurant setting today but serve a Mighty God in every moment. My attitude needs to be in check, my heart—humble, and my plan—His, not my own.

What does humility accomplish?

An overflowing joy!
Acts of obedience.
A softened heart.
A servant’s heart.
How are you experiencing humility? Where do you find joy?

Let’s journey together.
Father God, create in us humble hearts. Open our minds to Your plan, will, and desires.
As You love, we desire to love. As You care for others, we want to do the same.
Increase our awareness of opportunities to step out with humility and show Your love.
Help us, Lord, that we may say, “No, it’s okay; you go first.”
Oh, that Your joy will fill our hearts to overflowing.
Hallelujah. Amen.
